Vintage clothing is more than just a means to celebrate timeless fashion; it also allows you to exhibit your creativity and commitment to sustainability through up-cycling. Rather than letting old clothes build dust, why not turn them into wearable art? This is what owner of Cream Collective Co, Stacey, has been doing to old denim jackets and recycled fabric. Turning them into something new and old, at the same time.
Using fabric remnants from old clothes such as scarves, quilts and blankets, and saris, Stacey creates distinctive embellishments and textures on old denim jackets. In doing this, she creates one of a kind, timeless pieces, that fit effortlessly into your wardrobe!
Embellished jackets have been around since the 60's and 70's, what used to be a purposeful piece of clothing to highlight band merch or business ventures, has turned into something eco warriors do to save fabric and clothing from ending up in a landfill. Not to say this makes the jackets any less cool, in fact, we would argue it makes them even cooler, and the person sporting them a pinnacle of environmental sustainability practices. Go Stacey!
There are endless things you can do with fabric, and using it to make new wearable clothes is one of the best ways to reduce, reuse, recycle. I personally love the idea of being able to wear something that I know is one of a kind, and it's even better when I find it second hand! It's one thing to re-imagine your wardrobe, but to re-invent it using old things turned new again?? What could be better! My favourite part is that Stacey does it for you with her embellished Jackets, you know everything is ethically sourced and unique, and you get to enjoy her beautiful work of art meanwhile knowing she had a blast curating it for you.
It's really easy to get lost in the fashion industry as we know it today. Trends upon trends upon trends, and random fads from the 80s coming back to haunt us. Skinny, low rise jeans, faux fur, denim on denim (I'll admit I can get behind the Canadian Tuxedo). But why is it so hard to be happy with where we're at with clothes? Everyone is constantly trying to keep up with what's cool at the moment, they forget what amazing cool things they already have hiding in their closets.
This is what I love about thrifting, and buying second hand. The vision is totally yours, and the opportunities are endless!
